Behind the scenes of Elizabeth Gaskell’s world.

Diane Duffy, Chair of The Gaskell Society explores how servants were central to the running of Elizabeth Gaskell’s household, with around five employed at any one time to manage a wide range of duties. Although often taken for granted, their lives were demanding, and few left accounts of their experiences.

This talk explores what can be discovered about their work, daily routines, and living conditions, as well as the role they played in the household. Described by Gaskell as an ‘awful treasure’, they were indispensable figures with stories of their own.

This event will take place in the Picture Gallery at Tabley House.
